“You ready for this, gorgeous?” I ask, with unexplainable uncertainty.

She gives a forced smile and a tense nod of consent before looking away, but it isn’t enough for me. Moving my hand under her chin, I gently turn her face back to me.

“Elianna, you’re safe with me. I can promise you, I’ll be close even if I’m not by your side. Do you trust me?” I inquire. She looks at me as if she’s weighing the question.

“Lucas, am I in danger?” she asks, trying to put the pieces together and avoiding my question. Smart girl.

“I don’t know, Sunshine, but I’m not willing to take the chance. There are too many unknowns and until I know anything with certainty, I want to be the one keeping you safe.”

“Why you? Why not the Nicchi family? Do you feel responsible for me because your brother isn’t here?” She interrogates. She’s right to question my motives. Trust is a betraying bitch and a mistake can get you or someone you love killed. I don’t trust anyone to have my back completely, and because of that I’ll never be able to stop looking over my shoulder. Eli is different though. She’s safe with me and I want her to trust me, but I know it’s a lot to ask of people like us so I understand.

Even if my motive to stand beside her at the service was initially for Matteo, that changed the second she let the shield of hers down. Elianna is strong, gorgeous, confident, and too smart for her own good, but once she showed me her vulnerability, I was done.

“Let’s just say I have trust issues, sunshine. That’s why it has to be me. I would’ve done anything my brother asked of me, but he wouldn’t have ever had to ask me to keep you close,” I tell her truthfully. It seems the harder I try to ignore the facts in front of me, the more they come back to slap me in the face.

“So I should just trust you, Lucas . . . with my life? What do you really want from me?” Her voice drifts to almost a whisper.

“Everything, Elianna. Every. Single. Thing. If you aren’t ready to trust me, I’ll wait. Until then though, I’m still going to be the one to keep you safe,” I pause, measuring her for a moment, before continuing. “I want you to give me a code word in case you need a second to regroup or want an out. What will it be?” I probe, not allowing my hand to fall from under her chin. Even this small connection somehow seems to be bigger than we are.

“Liability,” she answers, her voice sounding fragile. It’s the first outward sign of weakness she’s shown me, other than the minutes we shared at Matteo’s service, when I was her comfort and shield of support.

Her eyes betray her confidence, and the instinct to reassure her is too strong to avoid. I drop my hand from her chin and move it, wrapping my fingers around her tiny waist, letting my free hand mimic the same on her other side. I tug her a step closer to me. Bending my head slightly forward, I rest my forehead on hers so that we’re eye-to-eye. Earning her trust isn’t going to be easy, but it’s necessary.

“Liability,” I repeat, my tone gentle and still somehow apologetic. I’m not sure what I want more from her. There’s a part of me that wants to push her away and keep my distance, but on the other half, knows I’ll never get her close enough to satisfy my desires. I can’t let her be my weakness though. Men like me would never survive in this this life with weaknesses. Elianna deserves better, and I know it, but knowing and accepting are two completely different things.

James moved with lightning speed. He grabbed me by the shoulders and pushed me back on the sand. His body partially covered mine as he threaded our fingers together over my head.

“My family will love you.” He searched my eyes. “Just like I do.”

I blinked several times, not at all believing what I’d just heard. I shook my head and swallowed.

“I don’t have family or money. You have both of those things. You’re expected to marry both of those things.”

“I have one of those things. The money isn’t mine, it’s my parents’, and I can marry whomever I choose.” His gaze devoured mine. “I love you.”

It was the first time he’d said it out loud, and my insides jerked as the weight of his words settled over me. “I love you, too.”

James leaned forward and placed a feather-light kiss on my lips before pulling back, his face inches from my own. His black eyes were ablaze, and the heat inside them flickered over my face before settling on my lips. I placed my hands against his neck and curled his hair around my fingers.

Applying pressure, I pulled him close, and this time when our lips met, something exploded. He tasted of salt and sea, and a warmth that had nothing to do with the setting sun burned in my lower belly. I pressed up and into his chest, feeling his body firm over mine, and finding it wasn’t enough. I wanted the confines of our bodies to fall away. I wanted to become a part of him, for our skin, bones, blood, and tissue to melt and mold together. To know that we were one person, now and forever.

James pulled away first, his breath harsh above me. I opened my eyes, breathless and confused. “What’re you doing tomorrow evening?” he asked.

“What?” I was on the verge of physically combusting, and his question—and its abrupt intrusion—confused me.

“There’s something I want to ask you. Something important.”

His words collided with me as if they had weight. “I don’t have plans.”

His eyes smiled. “There’s a party.”

“A party?” Hesitation edged its way between us.

“It’s kind of a big deal. My parents will be there, and I want you there, too.”

My breath caught in my chest. “I don’t know, James.”

“Just say yes.”

“I don’t know if—”

“Please,” he interrupted. “It’s just a party. Don’t overthink it.” His smile spread, and I couldn’t help but feel the tickle of excitement begin to flutter in my chest.

“Just a party?”

“Just a party,” he confirmed before running his lips against my jaw.

I nodded, and his lips moved across my cheeks and nose. But not until I verbally said yes did he cover my lips with his. I pressed my hands against his shoulders and ran them down the length of his arms, back up, and across his back. His skin jumped under my touch, and I reveled in the way his muscles bunched and relaxed as he moved on top of me. “Hey,” a booming voice called from our right. “This here is private property.”

James rolled to his side and then to his feet, pulling me with him in one swift motion. “Sorry,” he called with a laugh as we ran up the dune.

I gasped with every step, running at a pace I couldn’t sustain. James pulled me behind him, his strides so long I could hardly keep up. I stumbled, and the tiny button holding the ankle strap on my shoe broke in our haste. I kicked it off and left it behind so I could move faster, but now my footfalls were lopsided and awkward.

“In here,” he said as he pulled me into a dark alley between two buildings. There were no streetlights, nothing to light the blackened shadows, and the fright trembling inside of me was a living, breathing thing.

“What do we do?” My voice quivered between panic and exhaustion. “Where do we go?”

He pushed me farther into the shadows until my back pressed against the cool brick wall. My black and white satin dress stuck uncomfortably to my sweat-slicked skin, and my purse slipped from my fingers, dropping to the ground with a clink.

James placed a hand over my mouth and whispered in my ear. “Whatever happens, stay quiet. Don’t move. Don’t make a sound.”

His hands moved to my cheeks before linking behind my neck.

I shook my head, and tears filled my eyes. “I don’t know what you mean. I don’t understand.”

“Promise me.” His eyes were wide and urgent. His voice was soft but pleading.

“James, I’m scared.” His body pressed against mine, and he kissed me hard and fast.

“Promise me,” he said against my lips.

I didn’t want to and shook my head in disagreement. His thumbs grazed my cheeks, and he kissed me again. “Please.”

I heard the desperation in his voice—the despair—and there was nothing I wouldn’t do to erase that sound. My lips moved before my mind registered what I’d done. “I promise.”

He grabbed my hands. “Do you trust me?” “Yes,” I said.

He pulled me from the wall and turned me to my left. “Now jump.”

In front of me was a freshly dug hole about three feet wide, and just as I was about to protest, he pushed. There was a brief sensation of weightlessness before I landed with a thud, and the shallow puddle of water at the bottom did nothing to break my fall. I moved to my right and into the shadows, expecting James to follow me.

When he didn’t, I peered up to find him standing above me.

“James?” I asked. He tossed something down, and I stared at my purse lying at my feet. “James,” I said again. Hysteria rose inside my throat, but it was nothing compared to the crippling panic that seized my voice when he pulled a grate over the opening.

The sky was black above him, and his face was impossible to see. “Remember your promise,” he said. He stepped away, and my knees buckled under the weight of his decision. Choking on a sob, I was left alone with nothing more than the silence of my broken heart.

“Don’t take this wrong, but I really need you to take off your shirt.”

Pallas Saunders winced as she said the words—this was so not how she usually conducted an interview. But desperate times and all that.

Nick Mitchell raised his eyebrows. “Excuse me?”

A valid semiquestion and certainly better than simply bolting which, hey, he could have done.

“It’s an emergency,” she said, waving her hand in what she hoped was a can we please move this along gesture.

“I’m going to need more than that.”

“Fine.” She drew in a breath, then began talking. Fast. “I have a wedding in less than an hour and I’m one Roman soldier short. J.T. ran off to LA because his agent called about an audition. Note to self. Do not hire actors during pilot season. Anyway, I need a Roman soldier. You’re about the same height as the other guys and you’re here because you need a job, so take your shirt off, please. If you look halfway decent, I’ll sponge tan you and you’ll carry a very skinny girl in on a palanquin.”

“On what?”

“One of those sedan chair things. I swear, she probably doesn’t even weigh a hundred pounds. I don’t think she’s eaten in three months. You look strong. You’ll do great. Please? There’s a check at the end.”

Not a very big one, but money was money. And Nick Mitchell had answered her ad for a part-time carpenter, so he must be at least a little desperate for money. A feeling Pallas could so relate to.

“You want me to carry a girl in on a palanquin for her wedding?”

Why were the pretty ones always dumb, she wondered with a sigh. Because Nick certainly qualified as pretty. Tall with dark hair and eyes. His shoulders were broad and from what she could see, he looked to be in shape, so what was the big deal?

“The name of my business is Weddings in a Box.” She gestured to the walls around them. “This is box-like. People come here to get married. I do theme weddings. The couple today want a Roman wedding. You’d be stunned at how popular they are. The Roman wedding includes the palanquin for the bride. Please, I beg you. Take off your shirt.”

“You’re weird,” Nick muttered as he unbuttoned his shirt and tossed it onto her desk.

Hallelujah, she thought, walking around to view him from the back. As she’d hoped, he looked good—with broad shoulders and plenty of muscle. No massive tattoos, no ugly scars. Not that she objected to tattoos, but so few of them were Roman wedding appropriate and she really didn’t have time to do her thing with concealer. As it was, Nick would fit in with the other guys perfectly.

“You’re hired, but we have to hurry.”
